An investment in the Sovereign Gold Bond 2019-20 Series V issued at Rs 3,738 per gram is set to return Rs 14,725 per unit on premature redemption on Oct. 15, 2026, translating into a near-294% capital gain before interest. For savers who bought online, Rs 1 lakh would have grown to about Rs 3.94 lakh, underscoring how the government-backed gold-linked instrument has outperformed most fixed-income products over the holding period.
SGB 2019-20 Series V Set for Oct. 15 Redemption

The redemption price was fixed using the simple average of the India Bullion and Jewellers Association’s closing gold prices for the three working days through Oct. 14, in line with Reserve Bank of India rules. The payout comes after gold prices have stayed elevated, with the broader benchmark of 999-purity gold continuing to reflect strong demand for the metal as an inflation hedge and safe haven.
That matters for investors because SGBs offer two payoffs at once: the link to gold prices and a fixed 2.50% annual coupon on the original investment. In this case, the capital appreciation alone has been large enough to turn a relatively conservative government security into a high-return trade, making the instrument attractive to retail buyers who wanted gold exposure without storage or purity risk.
The move also reinforces the appeal of gold as domestic and global uncertainty persists. Gold futures and exchange-traded products have remained firm, while US Treasury yields around 5.10% and a steady dollar backdrop have not been enough to knock the metal off its recent strength, leaving Indian bondholders with an unusually rich exit.
For the government, the redemption highlights both the success and the funding cost of the SGB program, which was designed to channel household savings away from physical bullion. The next focus for investors will be whether more tranches are called for early redemption and whether gold’s rally continues to support valuations across bullion-linked funds and mining-related stocks.
