The Brown Coal Mine in Breza stopped production during the first shift after running out of fuel for machinery, deepening an operational and cash crisis at a site already hit by unpaid September wages and missing health contributions.
Breza brown coal mine halts production over fuel shortage

The shutdown matters because even a temporary stoppage at a domestic coal mine can tighten supply for Bosnia’s power system, which still relies on thermal generation and steady deliveries from mines tied to state utility Elektroprivreda Bosne i Hercegovine. Union chief Jasmin Telalović said miners had shown willingness to keep working, but production was halted because the mine could no longer fuel the equipment needed to extract and transport coal underground.
The stoppage also underscores how working-capital stress is beginning to turn into a production problem. When a mine cannot fund diesel and lubricants, it cannot keep loaders, conveyors and haulage equipment running, even if labor is available. That raises the risk of further disruption across the coal supply chain and adds pressure on the utility and local authorities to step in before the outage spreads.
For investors and creditors, the immediate issue is not commodity prices but operational reliability. Bosnia’s coal sector has long been strained by aging assets, labor tensions and weak balance sheets, and any interruption at a mine that feeds the power grid increases the odds of higher emergency procurement, more costly imports or additional fiscal support.
Telalović also said workers on treatment in Sarajevo Canton are facing problems because social security contributions have not been paid, highlighting how the financial breakdown is now hitting employee benefits as well as production. The next focus will be whether management or state-linked owners can restore fuel deliveries and payroll fast enough to restart mining before the outage becomes more than a one-shift stoppage.
