Fonterra lifts 2026/27 milk price forecast to NZ$9.50

Fonterra lifted its forecast farmgate milk price for the 2026/27 season to NZ$9.50 per kilogram of milk solids, a move that should support cash flow for New Zealand dairy farmers and firm sentiment across the sector after recent gains in global dairy auctions.
The co-operative also narrowed its forecast range to NZ$8.50 to NZ$10.50, up from a previous outlook that had been cut in July, signaling that recent strength in whole milk powder and skim milk powder prices is flowing through to the producer milk payout.

Chief executive Richard Allen said the higher midpoint was backed by improved Global Dairy Trade auction results and sustained demand globally. He also cautioned that geopolitical volatility remains and that early-season forecasts can still change materially.
For farmers, the higher milk price forecast matters because it directly affects income, debt servicing capacity and spending on feed, equipment and land. A stronger payout can cushion margins at a time when input costs remain a concern and helps stabilize the rural economy, from farm suppliers to transport and processing.

For investors, the update is a read-through on dairy pricing, one of New Zealand’s most important export earnings drivers. Better commodity prices can improve Fonterra’s returns and reduce pressure on the co-op’s broader earnings outlook ahead of its annual results later this week.
The revision also fits a wider pattern of firmer milk pricing globally, with dairy markets seeing support from supply constraints and resilient demand. That backdrop is constructive for producers, but it can add cost pressure for food makers and consumer companies that rely on dairy ingredients.
Fonterra’s outlook will be tested by upcoming auction results, exchange-rate moves and any disruption from trade or geopolitical shocks. The annual results due later this week will give investors a clearer read on whether the improved milk-price backdrop is translating into stronger underlying performance.
