Saudi Aramco has hired U.S. engineering group KBR to modernize facilities at the Marjan offshore oil and gas field, a move that underscores how the world’s biggest crude exporter is still spending to protect production capacity in a volatile energy market.
Saudi Aramco hires KBR for Marjan field upgrade
The contract matters because Marjan is one of Saudi Arabia’s key offshore assets and has already been the focus of multibillion-dollar expansion work aimed at sustaining crude output around 800,000 barrels a day while lifting associated gas processing. For investors, the award points to continuing capital spending by Aramco on upstream infrastructure and gives KBR another Middle East project tied to long-life energy assets rather than a short-cycle services job.
KBR said it will provide engineering and project execution services for the upgrade, including oil and gas processing facilities, gas compression systems and power infrastructure. The work will be run mainly from its Houston and Khobar offices, and will involve digital technologies, automation and power-system upgrades intended to support the field’s long-term operating performance.
The deal also fits a broader pattern in the Gulf, where national oil companies are spending to preserve output and improve efficiency even as crude markets remain choppy. That kind of work tends to favor contractors with deep offshore engineering capability and established relationships in the region, while reinforcing demand for maintenance, automation and systems integration across the energy supply chain.
For KBR, the award extends a long-running commercial tie with Aramco and adds to its energy-security and digital-infrastructure book at a time when Middle East spending can be uneven. For Aramco, it helps keep Marjan’s production base intact and supports gas capture and handling capacity, both of which matter as the company balances crude supply discipline with domestic and export demand.
The next investor focus will be on the scale and timing of execution, and on whether Saudi operators keep opening more brownfield and modernization work across offshore fields as they defend output and cash flow.
| Entity | Gains | Losses |
|---|---|---|
| Aramco | ▲Higher field efficiency | ▼Capital spending burden |
| KBR | ▲More backlog and revenue | ▼Execution risk |
| Saudi oil supply | ▲Longer-term output stability | ▼Higher project costs |
| Rivals/contractors | ▲Benchmark for offshore demand | ▼Less room for new awards |
