Indian equities snapped back hard on Friday, with the Sensex jumping 879 points and the Nifty reclaiming 22,500 as investors piled into IT, FMCG and banking stocks after Thursday’s sharp selloff.
Sensex and Nifty Rebound as IT, FMCG Lead Gains

That matters because the rebound came at a time when the market has been trying to decide whether the recent correction was a healthy reset or the start of something deeper. Friday’s move says buyers are still willing to step in quickly on dips, especially in large-cap defensives and export-linked technology names, which remain the market’s preferred refuge when volatility rises.
The Sensex closed 1.23% higher at 72,472, while the Nifty rose 1.30% to 22,520. Breadth was positive, with 2,344 stocks advancing against 1,686 decliners, and the recovery extended beyond the headline indices as the midcap index gained 1.46% and the smallcap index rose 0.55%.
IT led the charge, with the Nifty IT index climbing about 3%, while FMCG rose 2.25%, PSU banks added 1.62% and services stocks gained 1.79%. That mix is important for investors because it shows the market was not simply chasing cyclicals after the prior day’s weakness; it was rotating into sectors that tend to attract institutional money when growth visibility is murky and earnings quality matters more than narrative.
Among the biggest gainers, Apollo Hospitals jumped 4.72%, ITC rose 4.31%, Eicher Motors gained 4.17%, TCS advanced 3.85% and HCL Technologies climbed 3.38%. Adani Ports also added 3.10%. The move in IT names such as TCS and HCL Tech is especially notable: when global growth worries resurface, Indian software exporters often become one of the first places capital looks for relative safety and cash-flow durability.
Not every heavyweight participated. Cipla, JSW Steel and Reliance Industries finished lower, underscoring that the rebound was selective rather than broad-based conviction buying across the entire market. But the larger message for investors is clear: the dip was bought, and large-cap defensives and technology once again proved to be the first beneficiaries when sentiment turned.
The more important question now is whether this is the start of a sustained recovery or just a relief rally after a violent down day. For investors, the setup still favors staying positioned in quality large caps, IT services and consumer staples, while using strength in weaker cyclical names to separate durable compounders from the market’s short-term noise.
