Cotton farmers in Telangana are getting a rare windfall after the Adilabad Agricultural Market Yard recorded a state-high Rs 9,260 per quintal, above the central government’s minimum support price of Rs 8,667.
Telangana cotton prices hit Rs 9,260 in Adilabad
The early-season price matters because it sets the tone for Telangana’s cotton market and signals tight supply at a time when growers are already facing yield risks from El Niño conditions. For farmers, the higher-than-MSP bid improves cash flow and boosts income prospects just as the harvest begins.
The first-day auction also shows private buyers stepping in aggressively, with rates in other key Telangana markets coming close: Rs 9,250 in Jammikunta in Karimnagar district and Rs 9,110 in Warangal. That suggests a broad-based price firming rather than a one-off spike in Adilabad.
Cotton procurement under the Cotton Corporation of India began on the same day, with district officials overseeing moisture checks and weighing at the market yard. That matters because moisture disputes often delay purchases or reduce realized prices for growers, but dry weather has helped farmers bring cleaner produce to market this year.
Adilabad is one of Telangana’s biggest cotton belts, with about 4.37 lakh acres under the crop and an official production estimate of 35 lakh quintals. Farmers, however, fear output could undershoot that forecast if weather stress persists, making the current price rally more valuable but also keeping supply concerns in focus for ginners and textile mills.
For investors and the broader textile chain, the upside for growers can translate into higher raw material costs, especially if prices stay above the support rate through the season. The next key test will be whether procurement volumes rise smoothly at government centers and whether weather turns further squeeze arrivals in the weeks ahead.
