Walmart is moving its first Black Friday wave up to Nov. 12, giving shoppers nearly two extra weeks to chase discounts and giving the biggest U.S. retailer a longer runway to capture holiday spending before the Nov. 27 rush.
Walmart moves Black Friday wave to Nov. 12

The timing matters because early holiday markdowns have become a key tool for retailers trying to lock in price-sensitive consumers before they wait for deeper promotions elsewhere. Walmart said its early event will include discounts of up to 40% on home appliances, 30% on holiday goods, 20% on beauty products and 15% on tech devices, with Walmart+ members getting first access.
For investors, the move reinforces how aggressively Walmart is using value pricing and membership perks to defend traffic in a cautious consumer environment. The company has leaned on omnichannel shopping and Walmart+ to drive sales, and its U.S. e-commerce business has been a contributor to comparable sales growth, according to its latest filing.
The holiday push also puts Walmart in direct competition with Amazon, Target and other chains racing to front-load promotions. Walmart’s early deals have historically included limited quantities of in-demand items such as gaming accessories, Pokemon cards and tech gear, a strategy that can drive both site visits and basket size even before the official holiday shopping peak.
Walmart shares have been trading near recent highs, with the stock up sharply in recent sessions as technical indicators show momentum above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages. Adalytica’s Walmart earnings sentiment gauge also reads at 93, or “Extreme Greed,” highlighting elevated market attention around the retailer heading into the holiday season.
The next test is execution: whether Walmart can turn early traffic into higher volumes without giving up too much margin, and whether rivals respond with even heavier promotions as Black Friday approaches.
