Temporary jobs in Belo Horizonte are increasingly becoming a back door into permanent employment, with 50.8% of retailers planning to hire seasonal staff saying the chance of keeping those workers is high or very high, according to the city’s CDL/BH trade group.
Belo Horizonte retailers raise temporary hiring plans
That matters for the local economy because seasonal hiring is one of the clearest gauges of year-end retail demand and labor market depth. CDL/BH said 23.2% of temporary workers hired in 2025 were eventually retained, underscoring that the holiday rush is not just a short-term staffing fix but a pipeline for payroll expansion in sales and customer service.
The group said hiring plans for 2026 are concentrated in consumer-facing roles, with 57.4% of firms looking for salespeople, 49.2% for attendants and counter staff, 13.1% for stock clerks, 9.8% for assistants and helpers and 8.2% for cashiers. The strongest hiring appetite is among businesses preparing for Black Friday, where 25.6% say they intend to bring on temporary staff, most of them operating both physically and online.
For investors, the data points to sturdier short-cycle demand in Brazilian retail and services, especially among companies with exposure to holiday traffic, omnichannel fulfillment and entry-level wage costs. It also suggests continued churn in the labor pool: businesses want workers who can be converted quickly, while recruiters say the main obstacle is not demand but fit, with 41% citing lack of professionalism and responsibility and 23% pointing to too few candidates.
The broader read-through is that temporary work remains a meaningful gateway for labor market absorption at a time when companies still value flexibility. If year-end sales hold up, the key question into 2026 is how much of this seasonal hiring turns into permanent headcount rather than another brief burst of part-time payrolls.
