European natural gas prices stay above 80 euros on the Dutch TTF benchmark as low storage levels in Germany and across the continent keep traders braced for a tighter winter market.
European gas prices stay above 80 euros on low storage

October futures rise 0.95% to 80.83 euros per megawatt hour, with the move driven by inventories that are still lagging seasonal norms just over a month before the end of the storage injection season. German stocks are only 55.9% full at 138.4 TWh, while Europe overall sits at 68% and 775 TWh, well below the roughly 80% average for this time of year.
That matters because storage is the main buffer against cold-weather demand spikes, supply disruptions and price shocks. With fewer molecules in reserve, utilities and industrial buyers face higher procurement costs, and the risk of forced demand curtailments rises if heating demand jumps before replenishment is complete.
Italy is relatively better placed at 84.8% full and 172.5 TWh, but even there inventories trail the 183.22 TWh held a year ago. The gap underscores how uneven Europe’s gas balance remains heading into the heating season, leaving the region more exposed than usual to weather, pipeline or geopolitical shocks.
Bloomberg analysts cited in the report said current storage levels could leave European gas prices vulnerable to a move toward 100 euros per megawatt hour. For investors, that keeps the spotlight on utilities, industrial users and LNG-linked names, while reinforcing the inflation risk that energy markets pose for European growth and central bank policy.
The next catalyst is weather and storage data, alongside any fresh disruption in global gas flows, with traders likely to keep testing whether 80 euros is a floor or the base for a further leg higher.
