Gold prices in Egypt were set to open the morning session at elevated levels on Sunday, as a firmer dollar and still-restrictive U.S. interest rates continued to shape the metal’s global trajectory.
Gold in Egypt Opens Higher as Dollar Stays Firm

The key driver for Egyptian buyers is not local bullion supply alone but the combination of a strong U.S. currency and a policy backdrop that keeps the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold relatively high. A broad dollar index was trading near 99.6 on Aug. 7, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood around 4.63%, both factors that tend to cap upside in dollar-priced gold and feed through to local pricing in Egypt.

At the same time, the global gold market remains technically constructive. New York gold futures closed at $4,399.7 an ounce on Aug. 7, up sharply from the prior session and well above the 50-day moving average of $4,170.45. The metal’s relative strength index was 74, a reading that points to overbought conditions but also confirms strong momentum. The SPDR Gold Shares ETF, a proxy for investor demand, rose to $398.47, also above its 50-day average and with its own RSI at 72.8.
That combination matters for Egypt because domestic prices typically reflect both the international bullion benchmark and the local currency backdrop. When dollar strength persists, local buyers face a double burden: a higher global gold price in dollar terms and weaker affordability in domestic terms if the local currency is under pressure. For households, that reduces discretionary demand. For jewelers and traders, it raises inventory risk if the market turns lower after a momentum-driven run.
The macro backdrop is still tilted in gold’s favor over the medium term, even if near-term conditions look stretched. U.S. inflation remains elevated, with the latest CPI series at 332.568 in June and forecast to edge higher in July, while Fed funds were expected to hold around 3.63%. That does not point to an imminent collapse in real yields, but it does leave room for investors to keep using bullion as a hedge against policy uncertainty and inflation stickiness.
For Egyptian investors, the immediate question is whether the rally in global gold can be sustained without a pause. The technical picture suggests caution: gold futures are trading above short-term averages and momentum indicators are hot, which raises the risk of volatility if the dollar firms further or Treasury yields rise again. But as long as monetary easing remains delayed and geopolitical uncertainty supports defensive assets, local gold prices in Egypt are likely to stay firm rather than retreat meaningfully.
