Russia Seizes Auchan, Nestlé and Leroy Merlin Assets

France has condemned Russia’s move to place the Russian assets of Auchan, Nestlé and Leroy Merlin under temporary state administration, a step that raises the risk of forced sales, losses for remaining European investors and a further breakdown in Russia’s ties with the West.
The French foreign ministry said it urged Moscow to reverse the decision and said it was in contact with the companies involved. The seizure, which also affects the Russian unit of Auchan and the former Leroy Merlin business, was handed to a Russian company called L.E.V. Management, according to Russian media and local reporting.

For investors, the episode reinforces a clear message: foreign assets in Russia can be taken over with little warning, especially as the Kremlin frames European companies as belonging to “unfriendly” states. That increases the discount on any remaining exposure to Russia and complicates any future attempt by Western companies to exit on market terms.
Russia has already been a high-risk market for multinationals since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, when many companies cut operations or left altogether. Those that stayed have faced mounting political pressure from both sides, with Ukraine accusing them of helping finance the Russian state and Western governments warning of worsening legal and financial risk.

Analysts at Jefferies said such state takeovers in Russia are often a precursor to a forced sale or outright expropriation. That matters economically because it can strip foreign owners of control, lock in losses and deter new capital from entering Russia, while giving Moscow another lever in its standoff with Europe.
Adalytica’s Global Stability Sentiment gauge shows the geopolitical backdrop remains fragile, with the indicator in neutral territory but fear still elevated. The latest move is likely to harden European skepticism toward doing business in Russia and keep pressure on governments to coordinate a response, even if the options are limited while the war in Ukraine continues.
