ChatGPT is no longer just surfacing answers — it is now sending customers to small online retailers, and Tehnoconstruct says that new AI traffic is already translating into sales from as far away as Bulgaria.
Tehnoconstruct Says ChatGPT Drove New Sales
The Romanian construction-supplies seller said a Bulgarian client found the site through ChatGPT while seeking materials for restoring a fortified church, with the referral traceable through a UTM parameter. For investors and e-commerce operators, the more important point is that generative AI is beginning to function as a discovery channel, alongside Google search and social platforms, reshaping how shoppers find niche merchants.
Tehnoconstruct’s owner, Alex Crișan, said the company has spent the past year building educational blog content and FAQ pages based on what customers search for online, including content generated with help from AI. That strategy, he said, has made the company more visible not only in Google results but also in AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT.
The economics are straightforward: if AI tools increasingly decide where buyers start their shopping journey, merchants that rank well in those systems can gain traffic without paying for ads. Crișan said Tehnoconstruct has never used paid advertising in 13 years of online operation, calling the content-led approach a “form of survival” because paid campaigns stop producing orders once budgets run out.
The company’s results suggest the model is working. Finta Design SRL, which operates TehnoConstruct.ro, reported turnover of 7.8 million lei, up 10.7%, and net profit of 1.1 million lei, up 42.9%, making last year its best on both metrics. For a niche retailer, that kind of margin expansion matters because it shows organic traffic can still scale profitably even as customer acquisition costs rise across e-commerce.
Tehnoconstruct now plans to partner with depots around Romania to route orders closer to customers in areas where it lacks its own warehouses, using online data to place inventory and reduce cancellations for logistical reasons. That signals the next phase of AI-era commerce: not just smarter marketing, but tighter fulfillment, where the winners will be merchants that can turn AI-driven demand into delivered orders.
The broader backdrop is a sector-wide race to exploit AI in commerce, with large platforms such as Amazon and Shopify also pushing deeper into machine-assisted discovery and sales tools. The investor takeaway is that AI is not only a cost story for tech giants — it is becoming a distribution story for retailers, and the companies that can be found by AI may capture demand before their competitors even know where it came from.
