U.S. stock futures edged higher Wednesday even as investors braced for a hotter September inflation report that could keep the Federal Reserve on a tightening path and pressure already-elevated Treasury yields.
U.S. stock futures rise before September CPI

The move came with the 10-year Treasury yield at 5.20% and the 2-year at 4.77%, levels that underscore how much the market is leaning on inflation data to shape the next Fed decision. Fed funds futures were pricing a 21.6% chance of a rate hike after the October meeting, while Boston Fed President Susan Collins said it would be “appropriate” to raise rates “a bit further” before year-end if incoming data justify it.

Economists were looking for September CPI to rise 0.5% month over month and 3.6% year over year, with core CPI seen up 0.2% and steady at 2.4% annually. A print above those forecasts would reinforce the case for higher-for-longer rates, a backdrop that matters most for growth stocks and richly valued indexes such as the Nasdaq 100.
Still, futures held in positive territory ahead of the 8:30 a.m. ET release, suggesting traders were reluctant to position aggressively in either direction before the numbers hit. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust rose 0.17% in premarket trading to $779.32, while the Invesco QQQ Trust added 0.013% to $743.67.
Individual stocks were moving on company-specific earnings and deal news. ASML Holding rose 1.52% after reporting third-quarter earnings of $14.88 a share on revenue of $13.42 billion, beating estimates, while AZZ gained 2.43% after topping expectations with second-quarter earnings of $2.00 a share on revenue of $486.89 million.
Liquidia jumped 46.03% after announcing a global settlement with United Therapeutics that resolves pending litigation, while GameStop added 1.91% as CEO Ryan Cohen disclosed another 844,130-share purchase, taking his stake to about 42.49 million shares. UnitedHealth also edged higher after beating third-quarter estimates and saying 2027 consensus looks conservative despite continuing medical cost pressure.
The bigger market driver remains inflation, and the path for bonds, bank stocks and rate-sensitive sectors will likely be set by whether Wednesday’s CPI confirms that price pressures are still sticky. The Federal Reserve’s Beige Book later in the day will add color on growth and pricing power, keeping investors focused on whether stronger inflation starts to outweigh signs of economic resilience.
